Napoleon the Great: there is no arguing with that.Įxcept there is, on almost every conceivable ground. Enthusiasts will have to read the first two for themselves to decide whether their authors fall into the camp of Napoleon’s admirers or detractors, but the last proclaims its allegiance on its dust jacket. Notable among these are Napoleon: Soldier of Destiny, the first volume of a two-part biography by Michael Broers, Citizen Emperor: Napoleon in Power 1799–1815, Philip Dwyer’s sequel to his Napoleon: The Path to Power 1769–1799, and now Andrew Roberts’s Napoleon the Great. I would recommend his book to anyone seeking an accessible chronicle, rich in anecdote, of Napoleons fantastic story. The bicentenary of the fall of Napoleon was simply too tempting a subject for authors and editors alike. ![]()

This girl’s disappearance is introduced early in the novel to establish the mistrust of old Magnus as well as give the reader one of many suspects to consider for Catherine’s murder. No body was found and he couldn’t be charged. But is he capable of murder?Ī young girl named Catriona had disappeared some 10 years earlier and Magnus was their prime suspect. ![]() Magnus is clearly a mentally deficient person although capable enough to live on his own. She was strangled and left in a snowy field near Magnus’ house. Seems just about everyone in the small town believes eccentric Magnus Tait is responsible for the murder of Catherine.
