Instead of calling out this abuse apologism for what it is, Lexie tells Pearl she's proud of her, and wishes she “could have been half as thoughtful and forgiving” as her daughter when she was her age (p. After Lexie reveals the truth about Pearl's grandfather, Pearl admits that she can't hate him and in fact wishes her mother could see his good side. Despite the psychological and physical trauma to which Gus, the grandfather figure, subjects Lexie, Pearl is lauded for her reluctance to accept this side of her grandfather. ![]() ![]() My rating is a solid three, not four, however, for several reasons. Although I was bothered by the lack of physical description of most of the characters, they show distinct and developed personalities, moving the narrative along relatively quickly. ![]() With simple but precise prose, the author Jo Knowles weaves an engaging and unique story in young adult fiction. Feeling that her mother, Lexie's, life would have been better off without her, Pearl struggles with her sense of belonging, unaware of her mother's own struggles with a second life she has kept secret from Pearl and her father for years. ![]() Pearl, age 15, is raised by a mother who her age when she was born, and by a grandfather who treats Pearl kindly but torments his own daughter. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Criminal ed brubaker sean phillips![]() ![]() He’s not afraid to stand up to Seymour’s quick on the trigger ally, police or not, and he’s one meticulous planner. In other respects, though, Leo has some balls. “He doesn’t just walk away from trouble,” explains Seymour, “he runs”. The title applies to Leo, but doesn’t fit like a pair of cement boots. The trouble is that when he last worked with Seymour five years previously, people died. They have a diamond heist planned, and want an extremely reluctant Leo on board. Leo has a relatively comfortable life until he runs into an old partner, Seymour, now allied with a crooked cop. Minimise the risk, and don’t end up like your bank robber father. They may be there due to violent or dishonest tendencies, or they may be that crime fiction standby, the poor schmuck whipped up in escalating events beyond their control. This is biographical fiction about someone on the wrong side of the law. ![]() ![]() The title tells you everything you need to know. It’s been in print for over a decade, attracting new buyers with every new edition as word continues to spread. They’re both incredibly good, and Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Criminal series about sets the benchmark. At times it seems as if between them Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka are responsible for writing almost every decent crime graphic novel. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Think by simon blackburn![]() Which philosophers have most influenced your own thinking in these areas? ![]() Just at the present time I have been fascinated by the philosophy of truth and that is what I am trying to work on just now. At those different times I have been obsessed by the particular things I had been doing. As you say, I started in philosophy of science and epistemology, and moved onto philosophy of language and then ethics. Well, in the course of my career I have found them successively the most interesting, I suppose. ![]() My first question is which particular area do you find philosophically most interesting? Professor Blackburn, your philosophical interests cover a wide area including ethics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and so forth. Filiz Peach caught up with him in London to ask him about his ideas and his priorities. SUBSCRIBE NOW Interview Simon Blackburn After a decade teaching philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Simon Blackburn recently returned to Britain, to a professorship at Cambridge University. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Broken Wing by Judith James![]() To be together, will one of them have to give up their world forever? BOOK BLURB: How Easily One’s Heart Can Be Stolen…Depends Upon the Thief ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Fussell class![]() ![]() I’ve never felt that it’s because I was trying to put on any airs or be anything other than myself, but I sense a distinct class conflict in a variety of areas of my life and I think a college education at a diverse school, and in no small part this book, are a lot of the reason. Today, there is a bit of friction at times between my family and I because of how I view art or food or many other aspects of daily living (as well as what things I consider _part_ of daily living). I started to see the world in a different way and to a large extent was able to empathize (both for non-self-interest as well as for my own practical code-switching reasons which I was able to subtly incorporate into my interactions). ![]() The fact that class wasn’t just about money but also about privilege, expectations, ability & willingness to take chances, but also anxiety and fear and insecurities really resonated with me. It really blew my mind as someone who came from a solidly working class background from a tiny, rural town and was for the first time immersed in a world of people whose parents went to college or were academics or were my age but already had money. I read this book on assignment in a college interpersonal communications class as part of an engineering undergrad curriculum in the late 90s. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Kill River by Cameron Roubique![]() ![]() ![]() I read THE TROOP by the same author a few years ago, and I remember loving it! I’ve owned this book for almost as long, but just haven’t prioritized it for some reason – probably because the font in my UK copy is very tiny, and it’s a little intimidating. ![]() I thought it’d be fun to put together a little reading list of books that fit these genres so I can sort of ~live vicariously~ through them, hopefully maybe soaking up some imaginary rays (and blood splatter!) from my summer TBR pickings.įor these, I’ve decided to stick to a mostly horror theme, but I will be reading a few other books this summer as well! I’ll share a full “what I’m reading soon” post next week sometime! That said, I don’t particularly love spending all my time indoors or under a curfew, so as summer time rolls around, I’ve found myself craving things I wouldn’t normally – sun, beaches, camping, exploration! Every time, we end up leaving exhausted, vowing never to return because “this whole outdoors thing is NOT for us!” ![]() Maybe once a year or so, my boyfriend & I will make a 2 hour drive to Tahoe or some NorCal place with trees too large for this world (in a good way!), and we’ll pretend we’re experienced hikers (we aren’t). Who else is getting a little sick of being indoors? I’m not a super outdoorsy person, but I do enjoy the occasional venturing to places outside my home – you know, like the bookstore, the coffee shop, etc. ![]() |
